Now that we’re heading into fall, you likely won’t be needing your air conditioner much longer. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t require some maintenance before you turn it off for the year. There are still many things that you can, and should, do this fall that will help extend your air conditioner’s life span.

1. Reprogram Your Thermostat

If you have a programmable thermostat, reprogram it now with the cooler season in mind. The most energy-efficient temperature setting for the winter is between 68 and 72 degrees F when you are at home and awake. Programming your thermostat will prevent your cooling and heating system from working harder than it needs to. This, in turn, will help extend its life span and lower your utility bills.

2. Change Your Air Filter

Your HVAC system’s air filter removes dust and other particles from the air as it circulates throughout your ducts. As a result, the filter gets very dirty and should periodically be cleaned or replaced. Ideally, you should check your filter at least once a month, but some filters can last for six or even nine months. If you haven’t changed your filter in the last few months, do so now before the main heating season begins.

3. Clean Your Vents

Like your air filter, the air vents and registers get incredibly dusty over time. This dusty buildup will clog your vents and reduce your HVAC system’s efficiency. You should check these vents and dust them whenever you clean your home, but pay special attention to them when you clean in the fall. You’ll be spending more time indoors once it gets colder outside, so start the season off right with clean and clear air vents.

4. Clear Debris From Your Condenser

If you have central air, check your outdoor condenser and keep it clear of debris and vegetation. As the days get colder, too much debris and shrubs will look inviting to rodents, insects and other pests that could infest and damage your condenser.

5. Schedule an HVAC Tune-Up

Your HVAC system needs regular tune-ups to continue working efficiently. Even if your system has been working properly, schedule a tune-up at least once a year. Doing so will help extend its life span and may even uncover and fix issues that might otherwise turn into major repairs later.

If you haven’t scheduled a tune-up for your heating and cooling system yet this year, fall is the perfect time to do so. It will ensure that your air conditioner will be ready for next summer and that your heating system will be working properly this winter.
